The Canary Island restaurants are famous for their local cuisine, found all over the island, offering a huge variety of fish and seafood, and amazing specialty dishes. Fried fish, vegetable stews with watercress and shredded meat, and Canarian parboil can be found at Tagor, Casa Enrique, or El Jardín Canario. Make sure you try enyesques (Canarian for tapas) and papas arrugadas. Sample the ice creams that are made with roasted corn meal or bienmesabe!

Here is a list of some of the great restaurants in the Canaries:

• Lanzarote – Castillo de San Jose, a 16th century fortress serving international and regional cuisine with an art gallery. El Diablo is situated on a volcano. It has wonderful food and you will never see another view like this one.

• El Hierro – Casa Juan is an inexpensive restaurant that serves great vieja and cherne with mojo sauce.

• La Gomera – Casa del Mar serves fresh fish grilled, paella, or stew.

• La Palma – Chipi Chipi; dining rooms set around a lovely patio, good Island wines and grilled meats.

• Tenerife – Los Corales has a fabulous view of the valley. Their specialties are meat or fish carpaccio and conejo en slamorejo (rabbit terrine). El Dornajo is a good family restaurant with inexpensive and delicious food. For vegetarian food, try Hay Lo Que Hay. This is an Italian restaurant that only serves organic vegetarian dishes.

• Fuerteventura – Benjamin, noted for it potatoes with mojo, goat cheese and sorbets made from prickly pear fruit. La Casa del Jamon offers Basque dishes like roast kid, and Iberian cold meats.
